🏗️ Construction: Remote-Controlled Construction Machinery Powered by Real-Time 3D Visualization
In a context where construction site safety and productivity have become major priorities, EIZO Corporation and the Obayashi Group have conducted an innovative pilot project in Japan: the remote operation of construction machinery using a real-time 3D visualization system.
Working Remotely
This initiative was tested at a reconstruction site following the Noto Peninsula earthquake, located in a high-risk area where direct human intervention is restricted. On sites prone to landslides, collapses, or seismic aftershocks, keeping operators at a distance is essential.
However, traditional remote piloting often suffers from a lack of precision due to poor depth perception.
The goal of this experiment was to allow operators to control machinery remotely while maintaining an accurate three-dimensional view of the site, closely mimicking real-world vision.
The Core of the Innovation:
-
Stereoscopic cameras installed on the machinery to capture images from dual perspectives.
-
Real-time image processing, including distortion correction, left/right synchronization, and depth optimization.
-
Low-latency transmission, which is vital for ensuring safe and precise maneuvering.
-
EIZO professional 3D displays, designed for intensive use and clear interpretation of volume, distance, and terrain relief. It is this specific combination—capture, processing, transmission, and display—that represents the project's true technological breakthrough.

Observed Results and Benefits
The testing phase demonstrated:
-
Improved maneuvering precision, particularly for delicate or high-precision operations.
-
Reduced human risk, as operators remain safely distanced from hazardous zones.
-
Increased productivity, thanks to a better real-time understanding of the surrounding environment.
