🔋Battery: CATL Deploys Humanoid Robots on Battery PACK Production Line

Chinese battery giant CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited) has officially commissioned a battery PACK production line featuring integrated humanoid robots at its Luoyang facility in Henan Province.

This marks the first large-scale industrial application of humanoid robots on a production line for complete electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The line utilizes a humanoid robot named Xiaomo, developed by Hangzhou-based Spirit AI, a company backed by CATL.

Automating Final Battery Testing

Xiaomo is primarily deployed for final testing operations, a stage traditionally performed manually.

Key tasks include:

  • Inserting high-voltage test connectors.

  • Verifying electrical interfaces.

  • Performing visual and functional inspections before the products leave the line.

These tasks involve high safety risks and require extreme precision. By deploying robots, CATL aims to reduce human exposure to electrical hazards while ensuring consistent execution.

According to CATL, the robot can handle up to three times the daily workload of a human operator, achieving a success rate of over 99% for connector insertion.

Technical Capabilities and Operation

The humanoid robot is powered by a Vision-Language-Action (VLA) AI model, which enables it to:

  • Identify components and their spatial positioning.

  • Adjust movements in real-time to account for alignment variations.

  • Precisely control the force applied during manipulation.

Furthermore, the robot can switch between production and inspection tasks—even when the line is stationary—allowing for continuous operation without disrupting the workflow.

Industrial Implications

The integration of humanoid robots addresses several strategic goals for CATL:

  • Standardization of critical operations.

  • Enhanced safety at high-risk workstations.

  • Reduced labor dependency for repetitive tasks.

  • Quality stability across high production volumes.

This facility serves as a pilot site, with CATL planning to evaluate the progressive rollout of this technology across other factories and manufacturing stages.

A Full-Scale Industrial Test

Unlike laboratory demonstrators, this initiative represents a real-world application integrated into an existing industrial workflow. It signals a shift in battery manufacturing, where AI and advanced robotics are evolving beyond traditional stationary industrial arms.As the world’s leading EV battery supplier, CATL continues to optimize its manufacturing processes to meet increasing volume demands while managing costs, quality, and safety.
