⚡Energy: China Unveils AI-Powered Smart Operation Model for Large Clean Energy Base
China has launched its first AI-powered smart operation model for a 10-million-kilowatt-class integrated hydropower, wind, and solar energy base, marking a significant milestone in applying artificial intelligence to large-scale clean energy management. Developed by Yalong River Hydropower Development Company for the Yalong River base in Sichuan Province, the model integrates forecasting, power dispatching, operations, and market trading for coordinated management of diverse renewable resources.
Built on domestic computing infrastructure and supported by China's first high-altitude cavern-based intelligent computing center, the model extends the effective river runoff forecasting period from approximately 10 days to 60 days, enables real-time reservoir operation adjustments, and achieves over 96 percent fault-identification accuracy for photovoltaic equipment. According to Chinese Academy of Sciences academician Chen Deliang, the model facilitates the transition from reactive energy management to scientific prediction.

The Yalong River basin, one of China's largest integrated clean energy bases, is projected to reach 78 million kilowatts of installed capacity by 2035. Industry experts note that this model creates the first full-chain intelligent solution for large-scale clean energy bases, offering a replicable pathway for similar projects. The launch follows China's unveiling of 51 "AI+Energy" application scenarios in May, reflecting broader efforts to deepen AI integration in the energy sector. Experts emphasize that this convergence is crucial for enhancing energy system resilience and efficiency, while also holding strategic importance for China's industrial competitiveness and energy security.
